Uprising Make a Winning Start to the 2021 AFL Season

Well, what a fantastic way to start the 2021 season - A hard earned 2-1 victory against Diamond FC and a good all round performance too.

Going into the game we knew what a tough game we were in for having played against Diamonds in pre-season, a difficult start to the season was in prospect. But with a mixture of attacking flair and a sheer determination to win it was ourselves who bagged the points at the end of an exciting 90 minutes.

The first action of any note came in the 5th minute when Diamonds played a long ball over the top of the Uprising defence. Their forward tried to latch onto the ball but was thwarted by goalkeeper, Rachad Thomas who fled from his goal and cleared the ball to safety.

Just two minutes later and it was Uprising who took the lead with their first proper attack of the game. Rene Thomas who was superb throughout the game, played a ball to the left which found Stephan Fiedtkou. Fiedtkou bore down on goal and fired a well placed right footed shot into the bottom corner of the net. Will celebrations followed which was a delight to see.

Things got even better for Uprising in the 13th minute. This time it was Antoine Laurent with the goal, tapping in from close range. By this point we were in total control of the game and we almost went 3-0 up with Rene Thomas's long range shot going narrowly over the bar.

To their credit, Diamonds then came back into the game and went close to reducing their arrears when a shot by Fleming was well saved by Rachad Thomas.

Uprising had a great chance to make the game safe just before half time. A shot was parried by the Diamonds goalkeeper, with the ball falling to Antoine Laurent ten yards out, Laurent shot at goal but unfortunately the ball went wide of the post.

Half Time Score: Uprising FC 2-0 Diamond FC

It was a fairly quiet opening to the second half but it has to be said that Diamonds were the team with most of the possession. They kept on pressing forward but were denied any clear cut chances by some excellent defending, both Matthew Brown and Asharn Hodge who were brilliant on the night, used some great positional sense to thwart any would be danger.

Diamonds had a goal disallowed for off side in the 64th minute but got a goal back four minutes later. They were awarded a free kick on the right side about 40 yards from goal, Hodge floated the ball in which evaded everybody and sailed into the roof of the net. It was very reminiscent of Ronaldinho's goal against England in the 2002 World Cup.

Following this set back, Uprising kept calm and continued to work extremely hard to deny Diamonds any clear opportunities to score. It wasn’t all defending for the boys however as we still posed a good attacking threat. Indeed we almost increased our lead in the 81st minute when a header at goal was cleared off the line.

Two minutes later, Rachad Thomas made a fantastic save to deny Diamonds which turned out to be the last goal scoring opportunity for either side.

All in all this was a richly deserved victory for the boys and one that will provide the team with lots of encouragement for the season ahead.
